P2P Bitcoin buying · Germany / EUR research scenario
Hodl Hodl or Bisq? Start with a payment you can use.
A low platform fee is irrelevant if the seller cannot accept your payment. For an existing Bitcoin holder comparing P2P purchases, check the bank method, the BTC you will receive and the BTC you must temporarily lock before choosing a service.
This comparison uses an EUR SEPA bank account in Germany as a selected scenario. It covers native on-chain BTC and classic Bisq v1. The source author’s country and available payment methods are unknown. No live offers or personal accounts were tested.

01 / Which workflow fits?
Compare the conditions before comparing the price.
Hodl Hodl: inspect the seller’s offer
Consider it if you prefer a browser service and find a seller accepting your actual payment method. The seller funds on-chain escrow; you pay the seller and receive released BTC in your wallet. A supported currency does not prove that a compatible offer exists today. Official workflow and payment information.
Filter for on-chain BTC when that is your receiving wallet’s network. Lightning offers are a separate route. Inspect the final BTC amount, payment window and counterparty conditions before creating a contract.
Consider it if you can run the desktop application and have BTC available for its trade setup. Classic Bisq uses security deposits and trader-controlled multisig; payment goes directly between peers. Its offer book depends on other users. Protocol and liquidity explanation.
Bisq 2’s Easy protocol uses a different reputation model without the classic deposit. Do not apply this comparison’s collateral or fee assumptions to Easy.
A practical first decision: if no acceptable Hodl Hodl offer matches your bank method, inspect Bisq’s EUR market. If you cannot supply the required BTC collateral or stay available to complete its trade steps, classic Bisq may also be unsuitable. Waiting for a workable offer is a valid outcome; neither service is a guaranteed instant purchase.
02 / Bank and account checks
“SEPA supported” does not mean every account qualifies.
Bisq’s SEPA guide describes EUR purchases, a trade window of up to six days and account-signing limits for new buyers. It specifically excludes Revolut SEPA accounts. Check your exact bank account, the application’s current limit and the seller’s accepted account countries before moving collateral. SEPA Instant is a separate payment method; do not assume an ordinary SEPA offer promises instant completion. Bisq SEPA rules.
Hodl Hodl’s terms do not list Germany as excluded, but they restrict several jurisdictions and also consider citizenship, tax residence and current location. US persons described by those restrictions cannot use the service merely by selecting an EUR offer. Check all applicable eligibility conditions, including your bank’s rules. The terms also allow identity checks when required; the marketing phrase “no KYC” is not an unconditional promise. Eligibility and verification terms.
Bank transfers reveal payment details to the counterparty. Bisq explains that payment information is shared with your peer and may be needed in a dispute. Using P2P does not make a bank transfer anonymous or erase the history of coins you already bought elsewhere. Bisq privacy model.
03 / Quote the whole purchase
The published fees need a closer look.
Hodl Hodl’s FAQ lists a standard 0.75% trading rate and a dynamic minimum. Referral discounts have separate conditions and are not supplied by this page. Network costs and the seller’s asking price remain relevant. A small percentage beside an expensive offer can still produce a poor total price. Published fees.
Bisq’s own pages disagree. Its dedicated fee table lists BTC-paid classic fees of 0.15% for makers and 1.15% for takers, with a 0.000075 BTC minimum. Its general FAQ instead shows 0.1% and 0.7%. We have not verified the running application’s rate. Read the full fee screen in the version you use; neither set is a guaranteed quote. BSQ-paid fees are separate and introduce another asset choice. Dedicated fee table · Conflicting FAQ.
Match the payment budget. Record total EUR leaving your account, including any bank charge. Use quotes for the same amount and approximately the same time.
Record net newly purchased BTC. Include trade and network costs once. If the displayed receiving amount already subtracts a fee, do not subtract it again.
Track existing BTC separately. A security deposit returned after successful completion is your old money, not additional purchased BTC. Record the amount locked and the potential dispute exposure separately. Security deposit explanation.
Compare effective acquisition cost. Divide total EUR spent by net new BTC retained, accounting for BTC-denominated costs paid from existing funds. Note the quote’s expiry and any unresolved fee. A cheaper unfillable offer is not an available price.
Illustrative arithmetic, not market prices
If two hypothetical routes each cost €500 in total, and all costs leave 0.00500 BTC versus 0.00490 BTC of new holdings, their effective costs are €100,000 and approximately €102,041 per BTC. The first leaves 10,000 more sats. This example assumes every fee is already accounted for and excludes returned collateral. It does not predict an available quote or investment return.
04 / Make the decision
Choose an executable offer within your own limits.
Use Hodl Hodl when its actual offer fits your bank method, deadline and all-in price. Use classic Bisq when a compatible offer improves that decision enough to justify the application workflow and collateral requirement. If neither fits, do not open an unfamiliar payment account or increase the trade solely to access an advertised rate.
Keep the trade inside the selected platform’s documented process. Verify the receiving network, review the counterparty’s terms and retain the contract and payment records. Multisig changes who can move BTC; it does not remove counterparty, bank or dispute risk.
