Zero trading fees do not mean zero cost.
Coinbase One and Kraken+ can remove eligible transaction fees on their simple buy-and-sell screens. Both can still leave spread, payment processing and the eventual crypto withdrawal outside the headline. Compare the crypto delivered from the same GBP budget.

01 / What each plan actually covers
Match the plan to the screen you use.
Existing subscription
Coinbase One
Coinbase lists Coinbase One in the UK. Its Basic, Preferred and Premium tiers cover eligible simple spot trades up to different monthly volume caps; the exact local subscription offer belongs to the member checkout. A spread can still be included.
Coinbase Advanced is outside the simple-trade zero-fee benefit. Preferred and Premium may have separate Advanced fee rebates only in listed regions; the current UK table does not list that rebate. Do not value a benefit your account does not show.
Kraken lists Kraken+ globally at £4.99 monthly or £49.99 yearly. It covers transaction fees on Buy, Sell, Convert, Custom and Recurring purchases in Kraken app/web up to £10,000 monthly. Spread and card or other processing costs still apply.
Kraken+ does not apply to Kraken Pro, futures, API, OTC, Desktop or Wallet. App subscriptions can be monthly or yearly; the web currently offers annual billing. A new-subscriber trial and automatic renewal need checking in the actual account.
Paybis is useful as a quote baseline, not a like-for-like subscription. Its UK policy separates service fee, network fee and possible third-party payment costs and says the final spend and receive amounts are shown before confirmation.
02 / Make one fair comparison
Use three identical previews, then include the subscription.
Fix the same GBP budget and asset. Use the same day and a narrow time window. Record total GBP debited, not only the number entered in the buy box.
Use the screen you will keep using. Compare Coinbase simple buy with Kraken app/web Buy and the Paybis quote. Do not mix either subscription with an order-book rate from Coinbase Advanced or Kraken Pro.
Record crypto received. Capture the displayed fee, any processing charge and the final crypto amount. Spread is visible in the result even when it is not labelled as a separate fee.
Add the monthly plan cost. Divide subscription cost only across purchases you realistically expect that month. A free trial does not prove the paid months are cheaper.
Preview withdrawal separately. If self-custody matters, subtract the displayed native-network withdrawal fee and note any funding hold. Cheapest at purchase can differ from most crypto reaching your wallet.
Coinbase documents same-name GBP funding through Faster Payments and Easy Bank Transfer for eligible UK accounts. Verify the equivalent funding option in Kraken before moving: payment method availability can change the comparison more than the subscription price.
Keep Coinbase One if your actual simple-trade quotes, existing account access and withdrawal route beat the alternative after the subscription is allocated. Consider Kraken+ if you are eligible, use its app/web purchase flow and its all-in GBP-to-crypto result is better. Use Paybis only when its final delivered amount wins; a familiar checkout is not evidence of lower cost.
Kraken publishes revenue share, CPA or hybrid terms for approved affiliates, but assigned terms and new-customer rules control. The Kraken+ subscription renewal is not documented here as the payable event. No affiliate account or tracking link is active; these are ordinary official links.
Research origin: a full Reddit post from an existing Coinbase One user asking for a similar or cheaper exchange and finding Paybis expensive. The author's country, budget and Kraken account status are unknown; UK/en is our selected research market. We did not open an account or run a purchase.
