South Africa · ZAR to native BTC · reviewed 15 September 2026
Compare the Bitcoin that leaves the exchange.
If your previous exchange no longer serves your South African purchase, VALR and Luno offer different ZAR-to-BTC routes. A low trading fee is useful only when the account can fund, buy and send native Bitcoin to an address you control.
VALR lists free ZAR EFT funding and a 3.9% card deposit charge. Its first spot fiat-pair tier lists 0.18% maker and 0.35% taker; Simple Buy and Auto-Buy list 1.6%. These are different execution interfaces, so compare the executable BTC/ZAR price as well as the fee.
A transfer to your own external wallet is an on-chain withdrawal, not the free VALR-to-VALR transfer. VALR quotes the variable Bitcoin withdrawal fee on the send screen before confirmation.
Luno lists free bank-transfer EFT funding. Its Portfolio instant Bitcoin buy costs 2%; its first Exchange tier for other crypto/ZAR pairs lists 0.4% maker and 0.6% taker. The live order and Portfolio quote may differ, so use one total ZAR budget.
Luno quotes a dynamic send fee. Crypto sends start disabled; enabling them usually imposes a waiting period, and South African accounts need a passkey or 2FA. Travel Rule questions can apply when sending to your private wallet.
The fee pages describe published tiers, not a current executed quote. Account verification, limits, bank method and send availability must be confirmed in your own account. We have not opened either account or made a trade or transfer.

Calculate the native BTC your wallet can receive.
Use the same ZAR amount leaving your bank. Record EFT or card funding cost and the amount credited to each exchange.
Compare executable purchases. For each account, record the BTC/ZAR order-book quote and maker or taker fee, then compare the simpler buy screen separately. A posted percentage cannot capture the live spread.
Enable sending before committing funds. Check verification, withdrawal minimum, security hold and whether a native Bitcoin destination address is accepted. Luno's send-enabling wait can be material if you intend to move BTC immediately.
Preview the external send. Use your own Bitcoin receive address, confirm the Bitcoin network, complete any private-wallet ownership questions and record the actual BTC fee without confirming the transfer.
Compare delivered BTC. For each route, subtract the send quote from the BTC that the executable buy would credit. If one route cannot complete the send, its trading-fee headline does not solve this task.
VALR's order book may suit a verified buyer comfortable placing a BTC/ZAR order; its Simple Buy is a separate, higher published fee. Luno's Exchange and Portfolio interfaces offer a similar trade-off, with an explicit send-enabling step. Neither is automatically cheaper until the live prices and external-send quotes are compared at the same time.
VALR publishes a referral programme with crypto-denominated commissions from eligible referred users' subsequent trading fees after verification. It is not a cash subscription commission. This site has no referral code, approved attribution or verified payout; the links above are ordinary official links. Signup, verification, ZAR deposits and Bitcoin withdrawals are not claimed as payable actions.
Research origin: a full public post from a person in South Africa who said Coinbase had stopped serving their purchase and asked which exchange could buy Bitcoin before sending it to a hot wallet. The post dates to May 2023; today's suitability is checked against the linked current vendor pages. Search demand, SERP opportunity and customer conversion have not been measured for this experiment.
